During counseling, often some form of this statement is presented as the “problem” but there are deeper foundational roots at the cause… Stability can only be established when the WHOLE is in balance. Lets start with the soul.
What is Soul: nephesh, hebrew referring to the life in the body. Biblically referenced as the person existing in Mind, Will, Emotions, Thoughts, Imagination, etc …
We all need a strong foundation to anchor us through the storms and problems of this life. Secular counseling only focuses on the “soul” and “body” using formal programs and procedures. While secular counseling is valuable and good tool, Christian Biblical Counseling includes the spiritual part of our being. True freedom and healing comes from the whole spirit, soul and body being in balance.
Soul: Our soul (mind, will, emotions) is the piece that connects our SPIRIT and our BODY. When we only use our SOUL in connection with our BODY, there is little or no spiritual connection and we are out of balance.
When our foundation is only grounded in our everchanging and unpredictable wills and emotions, we can not find truth or stability to change what needs to change within us. In our own strength and wisdom, it becomes a fruitless and frustrating attempt.
Spirit: We were created a Spiritual being in God’s image. God is a Spirit and His work is done first in the Spiritual realm in us to then change the Soul and Body.
True lasting change can only begin at the foundation. Our makeup is grounded in first our SPIRIT then into our SOUL and finally into our BODY.
“For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid.” 1Col 3:11
Body: Our seen physical earthly Body is joined with the unseen Spirit and Soul to be complete. Change starts on the inside and works its way out.
