Early in my walk with God, one particular scripture kept coming into my thoughts and my awareness. At first it would feel more like a correction or rebuke. Imagine a voice harshly barking out “Be Still” with enough authority to stop you in your tracks. If it did halt me, the next sentence was also delivered in much the same tone as I was clearly reminded, “Know I am God.”
You see, at first I was very much at odds with God. Rebellious would be a forgiving way of describing my attitude.
My focus was to prove His word wrong and discredit the Bible. No matter what charge or challenge I would speak out against God, the response always started out the same. ” Be Still and ..” Of course I took His response as an ego trip response from the creator of the universe and felt like it was a personal offense against me.
We discover that we superimpose our feelings and emotions over the words we hear. This not only happens in our personal exchanges with our spouse, friends and acquaintances, but also with God. We set the framework then twist truth to match our expectations.
Did God’s attitude change towards me? His attitude, promise and love never changed, but I did. Soon the “Be Still” became “Sam, relax and give it to me, let me handle what you cannot.” The “and know I am God” became “know I am your God that has and always will be here for you.” As I came to know God for who He is, then He showed me who I was.
The life is in every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. God is alive and His word is life giving but there is more. God’s word is life sustaining when we are careful to listen and be doers of His Word.
